United Face £100m+ Price Tag for Rogers as Wirtz Deal Sets Market Benchmark

The transfer market's inflation continues unabated, and Manchester United are about to feel the pinch. Bringing Morgan Rogers to Old Trafford will require the club to splash north of £100million, according to reports, courtesy of the benchmark set by Liverpool's summer recruitment drive.

The Reds invested substantially in attacking talent last year, handing Bayer Leverkusen an initial £100million cheque for Florian Wirtz, with a further £16million in performance-related add-ons. The Germany midfielder's arrival at Anfield has effectively reset the market for elite young attacking talent in the Premier League.

Rogers, Aston Villa's 23-year-old England international, finds himself at the centre of this valuation debate. United's hierarchy, led by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have identified the versatile attacker—capable of operating across the left flank or through the middle—as their primary target for reinforcing the left side of their forward line. AC Milan's Rafael Leao has been mentioned as an alternative, but Rogers represents the club's preferred option.

The interest extends beyond Old Trafford. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain have all circled, whilst Rogers himself has suggested openness to continental football and harbours admiration for PSG boss Luis Enrique. Liverpool and Bayern Munich, meanwhile, have shown less concrete interest at present.

On the pitch, Rogers has delivered this season, notching 12 goals and nine assists across 50 appearances in all competitions for Villa. Manager Unai Emery has primarily deployed him in an attacking midfield role, though he's featured 16 times on the left wing.

Here's the problem for United: Villa hold all the leverage. Rogers' contract extends through summer 2031, and crucially, contains no release clause. The Birmingham club are therefore in a commanding negotiating position and they know it.

Villa sources have made their position abundantly clear. Whilst some quarters have suggested £80million might suffice, the club has dismissed such valuations outright. Instead, they're benchmarking Rogers against the elite tier of modern transfers, specifically pointing to Wirtz's move as a comparable deal. Both players sit at similar age profiles and are regarded as among the world's finest young forwards, the club's thinking goes.

The Villans view Rogers as deserving a premium reflective of the contemporary market. With Jack Grealish's 2021 departure to Manchester City for £100million representing the club's previous record sale, anything north of that figure would constitute new territory for Aston Villa.

Any interested club will need to come prepared for a substantial outlay. The days of picking up elite young English talent on the cheap are long gone.
