Zirkzee Signals Exit as Carrick Continues to Freeze Out Struggling United Forward

Joshua Zirkzee appears ready to call time on his Manchester United adventure, with the Dutch forward having effectively given the nod to his representatives to pursue fresh opportunities when the summer window opens.

The 24-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated with his predicament at Old Trafford, where regular football has remained frustratingly elusive. Since arriving from Bologna in summer 2024, Zirkzee has managed nine goals and four assists across 71 outings, hardly the impact expected from a significant investment. This season has proven particularly bleak—just four Premier League starts to his name—and matters have barely improved under Michael Carrick's interim stewardship, which began in January. The interim manager has deployed Zirkzee on merely six occasions.

Zirkzee's despondency stems partly from the revolving door of coaching staff, with neither Ruben Amorim nor Carrick showing genuine faith in his abilities. Reports suggest the forward felt sufficiently optimistic to reject several January offers, believing a fresh start under new management might unlock his potential. That optimism has since evaporated.

According to Italian sources, the forward now feels "discouraged and disappointed" by his Manchester circumstances and has tasked his team with engineering a departure. Juventus are understood to be circling, positioning themselves as the leading contenders for a Serie A homecoming this summer.

The contrast with Kobbie Mainoo's trajectory tells a rather different story. The 21-year-old midfielder similarly craved an escape route on loan during January, yet Carrick convinced him to remain. That decision has vindicated itself spectacularly. Mainoo has since flourished under the interim boss, becoming a cornerstone of the starting XI when available, and has freshly penned a new contract.

Carrick's glowing assessment of Mainoo ahead of this weekend's Liverpool clash illustrated his genuine admiration for the academy graduate. "I've been hugely impressed with Kobbie since I've been here," Carrick explained. "He epitomises this football club—young players coming through the Academy, who live and breathe the club and come through with real talent. The last couple of games in particular, he's been fantastic. The natural evolution is signing a new contract and everyone's over the moon with that, including me, because I think he deserves it."

For Zirkzee, such endorsements remain a distant prospect.
