Ibrahima Konate has turned down the opportunity to move to Manchester United, instead fixating on a switch to Real Madrid this summer.

The Liverpool centre-back is departing Anfield as a free agent after contract negotiations between the club and the France international came to nothing. Despite publicly suggesting in April that he was edging closer to penning fresh terms, Konate's time on Merseyside has come to an end.

United, who finished third in the Premier League under Michael Carrick and will compete in next season's Champions League, have tabled an offer for the 27-year-old. Yet the move holds little appeal for Konate, who has his heart set elsewhere.

The defender has attracted interest from an array of heavyweight suitors. Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City and the Red Devils have all made their pitch. None, however, match the allure of the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid have maintained a long-standing interest in Konate and are actively hunting for defensive reinforcements. The Spanish giants' impending managerial appointment of Jose Mourinho appears to be the decisive factor. The Portuguese tactician, who previously managed both United and Chelsea, has personally engaged with Konate on multiple occasions, outlining his vision for the squad he intends to construct at Madrid.

Mourinho's personal circumstances—he maintains a permanent London residence where his wife and children are based—have reportedly featured in discussions with the defender, who is familiar with the manager's work across his spells in English football.

Over his time at Liverpool, Konate made 183 appearances, chipping in with seven goals and four assists. He claimed Premier League and FA Cup medals during his stint on Merseyside, whilst also lifting the EFL Cup on two occasions.

Meanwhile, United continue their summer recruitment drive under INEOS ownership. The club are deep in negotiations to recruit Ederson from Atalanta, with midfield reinforcement a priority. A new centre-back is lower on the agenda, particularly given Harry Maguire's contract extension in April.
