Maguire Hails Casemiro as Set-Piece Menace After Brentford Victory

Manchester United's defensive stalwart Harry Maguire has sung the praises of midfield anchor Casemiro in the aftermath of Monday's 2-1 Premier League victory over Brentford at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick's stewardship.

The Brazilian was on hand to break the deadlock just 11 minutes in, nodding home from an acute angle after Maguire's corner-kick header had found him lurking dangerously near the far post. It proved a vintage piece of set-piece coordination between the pair.

The finish marked Casemiro's ninth league goal of the campaign, adding to two assists accumulated across 32 top-flight appearances. Since arriving from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 for a reported £70million outlay, the 34-year-old has become an increasingly influential figure in both boxes.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Maguire was effusive in his assessment of his teammate's aerial prowess. "I thought I was decent at attacking in the box until I met Casemiro," the England international reflected. "His timing, his leap, his aggression, his technique—it's the best I've seen and worked with. He's clinical too. Without his goals this season, we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are in the table."

Beyond mere statistics, Maguire highlighted the tactical advantage their twin threat presents opposition defences. With both commanding figures operating in the attacking box during set plays, defending becomes a mathematical headache for rivals.

"Teams now have to respect that Casemiro is a massive threat," Maguire explained. "They can't just double up on me anymore—they have to assign a quality defender to him instead. It frees us both up. Our record when we play together shows it works: I get more opportunities when he's on the pitch, and he finds the back of the net more often when I'm there. Having two genuine targets in the box makes life considerably tougher for the opposition."

Carrick echoed the sentiment in his Match of the Day analysis, noting the midfielder's importance to recent performances. "He's scored crucial goals for us," the interim manager confirmed. "Bruno, Harry and Casemiro have built a strong understanding. We came out wanting to start brightly, be dangerous and creative—and we delivered on that."

The midfielder departs Old Trafford at season's end, but his contributions this term have proven invaluable to United's push up the table.
