Barcelona Push for Rashford Loan Extension as Manchester United Dig In on €30m Fee

Negotiations between Barcelona and Manchester United over Marcus Rashford's future have intensified, with the Spanish club exploring alternative arrangements to secure the winger beyond this summer.

Rashford arrived at Camp Nou on a season-long loan last summer and has flourished under Hansi Flick's management. The 13-goal, 13-assist contribution across 45 appearances has been instrumental in Barcelona's push for consecutive LaLiga titles. Yet the club faces a financial crossroads: the permanent deal carries a €30million (£26m) price tag, and Barcelona's coffers are constrained.

According to reports from Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg on April 28, the Catalan side have tabled two possibilities to United. First, another temporary arrangement—a second loan spell—would ease their immediate financial burden. Alternatively, they're requesting that United lower the original purchase fee.

Flick's backing carries weight in these discussions. The manager has made clear to the Barcelona board that he wants Rashford to remain part of his squad, signalling the priority placed on maintaining squad continuity.

The forward himself has already publicly committed to staying. In comments from December 2025, Rashford explained his reasoning: "Of course, what I want is to stay at Barca. It's the ultimate goal, but it's not the reason I'm training hard and giving my all. The purpose is to win. Barca is a huge, fantastic club, built to win titles."

He elaborated on the environment that suits him: "There is pressure here, but it's not negative pressure; it's the kind you crave as a player, the kind I want and have always wanted as a footballer. I can't be in a place where there aren't high expectations; for me, it's harder to stay motivated and give my best at a club where the demands aren't at their peak."

The England international remains under contract at Old Trafford until summer 2028 but has made his intentions crystal clear—a return to Manchester is not on his agenda.

Transfer insider Ben Jacobs revealed that while Rashford has "already agreed terms" with Barcelona, United are unwilling to budge on the fee structure. Despite Barcelona's suggestion of a second loan being discussed as far back as January, no breakthrough has materialised. Jacobs noted that the impasse has led to speculation about Barcelona cooling their interest and exploring alternative targets, though a resolution remains possible "on the right terms."

For now, the ball sits firmly in United's court. Whether they'll soften their stance or force Barcelona to find another solution remains the key question as summer approaches.
