The Catalan giants had until June 15 to trigger the £26million buy-option on the England winger's temporary arrangement, but the deadline has come and gone with no deal materialised. Barcelona have made their position abundantly clear: they're simply not prepared to stump up that sort of cash.

Yet here's where it gets interesting. The Spanish champions aren't done with Rashford just yet. They're keen on keeping him around, but only on a season-long loan basis—a proposition that cuts absolutely no ice with United, who are determined to shift the 28-year-old off their wage bill permanently this summer.

Transfer correspondent Fabrizio Romano confirmed the situation on June 16, noting that Rashford had formally returned to Old Trafford following the expiration of Barcelona's €30m buy option. "No decision on future yet as Barça are still keen on keeping Marcus but only on loan," Romano wrote. "Man United taking their time to make decision."

The Red Devils, meanwhile, have already started shopping their winger around. Arsenal and Chelsea have been informed that Rashford is available for purchase, while a clause in his contract prevents any deal with Liverpool or Manchester City—though a £40m asking price would be available to other suitors.

But here's the rub: Rashford isn't ready to wave the white flag. The winger remains utterly determined to make Barcelona work, convinced that his future lies at Camp Nou rather than anywhere else. Despite Barcelona's reluctance to meet United's valuation, the player himself hasn't abandoned hope.

Spanish outlet Marca reports that Rashford is "not throwing in the towel," with the headline proclaiming "Rashford ignores deadlines: he's sticking to Barca." According to the publication, his "desire to continue wearing the Barcelona jersey remains unchanged."

The player had apparently braced himself for this outcome as June wore on without progress, watching from the sidelines as Barcelona attempted to negotiate United down from their €30m asking price established last summer when the loan was finalised. Yet even that setback hasn't extinguished his optimism entirely.

Rashford's faith is buoyed by two factors: the arrival of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle doesn't necessarily signal the end of his Barcelona chapter, and crucially, manager Hansi Flick personally assured him of his importance before departing for World Cup duties. That personal backing, it seems, is enough to keep the flame alive.

"The 28-year-old English winger remains committed to Barca," Marca stated. "He is confident he can stay in Flick's squad, either by extending his loan or through a negotiated transfer with new financial terms."

Rashford's case for a return is hardly without merit. During his campaign in Catalonia last season, he notched 14 goals and provided 14 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions—a return that suggests he's been a genuine asset to the club. The winger is also part of England's squad for the 2026 World Cup, meaning his stock remains reasonably high.
