United Edge Ahead in Chase for West Ham's Fernandes

Manchester United look set to win the race for Mateus Fernandes, the West Ham midfielder expected to cost INEOS £80million as the Hammers prepare for life in the Championship following their Premier League relegation.

The Red Devils have shifted their attention to Fernandes after deciding against pursuing Elliot Anderson, with Nottingham Forest's £130million asking price deemed excessive. According to Tyrone Marshall, Manchester United's correspondent at the Manchester Evening News, the club refuses to be drawn into bidding wars and instead targets players genuinely keen on the move.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that United have opened formal dialogue with Fernandes' agent and are preparing a bid for the West Ham player. However, Romano cautioned that other clubs remain interested and the situation could yet develop into a competitive scramble for his signature.

The Times reported on 12 June that United, who will compete in the Champions League under Michael Carrick next season, stand favourites to land the Portuguese international. Both Arsenal—last season's Premier League champions—and Real Madrid, with new boss Jose Mourinho at the helm, have also registered their interest.

West Ham's drop to the second tier means Fernandes will likely seek a way out, making the 26-year-old more attainable than some alternatives. The prospect of Champions League football at Old Trafford should prove an attractive proposition for a player of his calibre.

Former United striker Michael Owen has thrown his weight behind the move, suggesting Fernandes represents precisely what Carrick's midfield requires. Owen highlighted the player's performances last season and his age profile as significant advantages, noting that spending £80-100million demands acquiring someone with years ahead of them rather than a late-twenties performer.

Owen sees potential for Fernandes to partner Kobbie Mainoo in midfield, creating a partnership capable of driving United's domestic and European ambitions. The former striker also referenced alternatives like Baleba at Brighton and Scott at Bournemouth, but made clear his preference: "If it were me I would be getting Fernandes from West Ham."
