Romano Quashes Spurs Interest as Arsenal Emerge as Unlikely Suitors for Greenwood

The Mason Greenwood transfer saga has taken another twist, with conflicting reports emerging about potential summer moves for the Marseille striker—though one respected source has already poured cold water on one of the headline claims.

French outlet L'Équipe has suggested that both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are among a clutch of clubs eyeing the 24-year-old England international, alongside AS Roma. The Italian side have reportedly even reached an 'agreement in principle' with Greenwood on a contract running until 2031, according to reports from the Italian media.

Yet Fabrizio Romano has swiftly dismissed the Spurs angle. The transfer specialist posted on X at 3:43pm on June 19: "Tottenham are not working on deal to sign Mason Greenwood despite reports."

Greenwood's journey since leaving Old Trafford has been eventful. Manchester United offloaded him to Marseille in summer 2024 following a loan stint at Getafe, with the English forward's departure coming amid off-pitch controversy that has effectively ended any prospect of him returning to United. The Red Devils retained a 40% sell-on clause in the arrangement, meaning any future sale would trigger a significant payment their way.

The 24-year-old has impressed during his time in Ligue 1, and L'Équipe reports he is contracted to Marseille until 2029. The French club would reportedly struggle to turn down a lucrative offer—particularly one exceeding market value—given Manchester United's financial stake in the player's future.

"Greenwood has no shortage of suitors," L'Équipe stated, listing Roma, Arsenal, and Tottenham among interested parties.

Current Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi has worked with Greenwood at the club, adding an interesting dimension to any potential managerial considerations.

However, a Premier League return appears improbable. Beyond Romano's dismissal of Tottenham's involvement, Arsenal's position looks equally problematic from a reputational standpoint. While Greenwood performed admirably on loan at Getafe and has delivered the goods in France, the optics of the Premier League champions recruiting a player with his baggage would be decidedly uncomfortable—regardless of his on-pitch credentials.
