United Circle Back on Carreras as Cucurella Heads to Madrid

Manchester United are quietly weighing up a potential reunion with Álvaro Carreras at Old Trafford, following Real Madrid's completion of Marc Cucurella's transfer from Chelsea, according to reports.

The Old Trafford hierarchy are keen to bolster their left-back options this summer, with the search for a long-term deputy to Luke Shaw very much on the agenda. Newcastle's Lewis Hall remains a primary target for INEOS, whilst Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly—capable of operating as a full-back or midfielder—continues to attract attention, though a move from the Gunners seems highly unlikely given his status as a 19-year-old England international.

Cucurella had been firmly on United's radar, with the Spanish defender seemingly eager to depart Stamford Bridge. Barcelona also harboured designs on the 27-year-old's services, but Real Madrid have now secured his signature, with the deal valued at £51.8million.

That development has prompted United to explore whether Carreras might be available. The defender, who arrived at Madrid from Benfica in summer 2025 for €50million, was the club's first-choice left-back last season. However, with Cucurella now primed to become Jose Mourinho's preferred option, Carreras faces the prospect of significantly reduced game time.

No formal approach has yet been lodged, though United are internally assessing the situation and keen to understand what options might exist for the player. Should Carreras seek a move to guarantee regular football, United could represent an intriguing opportunity.

Carreras' history at Old Trafford is rather modest. He was on the club's books from 2017 to 2020 but failed to establish himself in the senior setup, instead gaining experience through loan moves at Preston North End, Granada, and Benfica before joining the Portuguese outfit permanently in 2024.

Last season in the Spanish capital, Carreras contributed two goals and three assists across 40 appearances. Cucurella, meanwhile, managed one goal and four assists in 50 matches for Chelsea throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
