Manchester United Eye Summer Midfield Overhaul with £52m Villarreal Swoop on Radar

Manchester United are gearing up for a substantial midfield investment come summer, with Spanish outlet Fichajes reporting that the Red Devils are prepared to shell out €60m (£52m) for Villarreal's Pape Gueye.

The Senegal midfielder fits the bill for what the club is seeking: a player capable of delivering solidity, ball recovery, and tactical discipline in the engine room. According to the report, Gueye's experience in European competition and consistent improvement make him an attractive proposition to plug that midfield gap.

"His versatility and reliability in demanding situations have impressed the technical department," the report suggests, framing the move as strategically shrewd rather than headline-grabbing.

This midfield reinforcement comes as United prepare for significant departures. Casemiro is set to leave when his contract expires, whilst questions hang over Manuel Ugarte's future at Old Trafford. Having invested over £200m on five summer arrivals—Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, and Senne Lammens—the club's early-season struggles under Ruben Amorim forced a rethink.

After Amorim's departure last month, Michael Carrick stepped in as interim manager and has steadied the ship with four wins and a draw from his opening five matches, prompting some observers to suggest he deserves a permanent opportunity.

However, Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke suggests Gueye may not be top of United's wish list. Aston Villa's Amadou Onana features on a four-man shortlist, though O'Rourke indicates he ranks below other targets.

"The central midfield position is going to be a priority for Manchester United this summer," O'Rourke explained. "Casemiro is leaving at the end of the season, and there are doubts over Ugarte's future as well, so they're going to need strengthening there."

O'Rourke highlighted Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson as players positioned higher than Onana in the pecking order. "Onana remains on the list, but he's probably not at the top of it," he noted, adding that Aston Villa would likely resist losing their midfielder anyway.
