Man Utd Shelve Wharton and Tonali Pursuit as Midfield Overhaul Continues

Manchester United have ditched plans to pursue Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali this summer, despite both featuring prominently on their radar as the club embarks on a significant midfield overhaul.

The Red Devils splurged over £250m during last summer's transfer window, concentrating their efforts on bolstering the attacking ranks alongside bringing in Senne Lammens as their new number one. Yet their midfield remained conspicuously neglected, much to the frustration of supporters watching from the stands.

That oversight will be addressed in the coming window, with United plotting the arrival of at least two midfield reinforcements. The departures of Casemiro—leaving on a free transfer at season's end—and Manuel Ugarte, who looks set for the exit door, have opened up the necessary space in the squad.

Transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has now revealed why both Tonali and Wharton have fallen down the pecking order. Speaking on The United Stand, he explained: "Manchester United are not keen on signing Tonali due to his high fee and wages, feeling he wouldn't represent value for money. Also, Adam Wharton could be ruled out, with the club viewing him as too similar in profile to Kobbie Mainoo."

The decision to rule out Tonali prompted considerable reaction from United supporters. Influencer Mark Goldbridge questioned the club's logic, suggesting that a £100m midfielder aged 26 and ranked among Europe's finest should command premium wages. He argued that expecting top-tier midfield talent without paying top-tier fees was unrealistic, pointing out that elite operators naturally command salaries in the £250,000-£300,000 weekly range.

United legend Ryan Giggs has expressed disappointment at the Wharton snub, believing the Palace youngster fits the profile of a Manchester United midfielder. Speaking on the Webby & O'Neill fan channel, Giggs outlined his vision for the summer's business, emphasising that sorting out the futures of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Rasmus Hojlund remains necessary, though midfield strengthening takes priority.

"The priority is definitely midfield," Giggs stated, noting that Mainoo appears set to stay whilst Casemiro and Ugarte will depart. He expressed particular enthusiasm for left-footed operators, highlighting Wharton's credentials as a composed ball-player with Premier League pedigree and the ability to drive forward with purpose.

Giggs also flagged Newcastle's Elliot Anderson as an alternative, describing him as a reliable performer who features consistently. He envisaged several potential pairing combinations—Wharton alongside Mainoo, or Anderson with Wharton—though he acknowledged that the cost of British talent remains a significant constraint on United's spending plans.
