Manchester United's midfield rebuild is gathering momentum, with Ederson set to become the vanguard of a potentially transformative summer window at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old midfielder has already agreed to a five-year contract with the Red Devils. With Atalanta's internal restructuring now complete, negotiations between the clubs are progressing swiftly and a deal is expected to be wrapped up imminently.

Once Ederson arrives, United's recruitment team will shift focus to their remaining targets. The club's wish list has been lengthy—encompassing Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Aurelien Tchouameni among others—but recent reports suggest the hierarchy has narrowed their sights considerably.

Wharton Slips Down the Pecking Order

Adam Wharton's stock at United has taken a tumble. The Crystal Palace midfielder, long a fixture on United's radar, appears to be falling victim to financial considerations. According to the latest intelligence, the cost of prising Wharton away from Selhurst Park has prompted United to reassess their priorities.

Instead, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have emerged as the primary targets to follow Ederson through the Old Trafford door.

The Fernandes Factor

Fernandes, currently at West Ham, is viewed as United's first-choice option should the Portuguese midfielder seek a move this summer. With the Hammers facing relegation to the Championship, an exit from East London appears increasingly inevitable.

United have reportedly accelerated discussions with Fernandes' representatives and are leading the race for his signature. However, Tonali remains a compelling proposition—and manager Michael Carrick's preferred option in the middle of the park, though concerns about Newcastle's asking price have given INEOS pause for thought.

Chelsea Circle Wharton

While United's retreat from the Wharton pursuit might seem beneficial for Crystal Palace, the reality is rather different. The Eagles have already indicated their desire to keep the 22-year-old, with plans to offer him a substantial new contract and the prospect of Europa League football.

But United's change of direction has inadvertently opened a window for Chelsea. Transfer expert Dean Jones has identified the Blues as genuine contenders for Wharton's signature, with Xabi Alonso's side having monitored the midfielder throughout the season.

Chelsea's interest appears disconnected from speculation surrounding Enzo Fernandez's future and instead reflects broader concerns over the fitness and futures of players such as Romeo Lavia and Andrey Santos.

The midfielder fits Chelsea's evolving transfer philosophy—young, already proven at Premier League level, and capable of making an immediate contribution. Having learned from a strategy overly reliant on potential, BlueCo's ownership is now prioritising precisely this profile of player heading into the summer window.
