United Circle Back to Premier League for Goalkeeper Support as Bayindir Nears Exit

Erik ten Hag's arrival at Old Trafford brought Altay Bayindir through the door last summer, but the Turkish goalkeeper's time appears to be running its course. With Senne Lammens impressing during his debut campaign following his move from Royal Antwerp to replace Andre Onana, United are now looking to bolster their goalkeeping ranks with seasoned Premier League experience.

The search has led the Reds to two homegrown options: Karl Darlow and Sam Johnstone, according to reports. Both represent the kind of established figures capable of providing genuine competition and mentorship to Lammens without demanding regular minutes.

Darlow, at 35, finds himself available on a free transfer this summer as his Leeds United contract expires at the end of June. The veteran shot-stopper enjoyed a productive campaign at Elland Road, making 22 Premier League appearances and displacing Lucas Perri as the club's first choice. Leeds are keen to retain his services and are expected to offer fresh terms, yet United are weighing up a move for the experienced custodian.

Wolves' Johnstone presents an alternative route. The 33-year-old came through United's academy ranks and retains two years remaining on his Molineux deal. His pedigree and familiarity with the club's structures make him an intriguing prospect for the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Both candidates tick the homegrown quota box, an increasingly important consideration in modern football operations. Tottenham Hotspur are also sniffing around the position, though their involvement appears less developed at present.

Bayindir's exit looks increasingly inevitable. The plan remains for him to depart and secure regular playing time elsewhere, with United actively working on securing his replacement. Tom Heaton will continue as third-choice goalkeeper.

As for Onana, who endured a difficult spell last season before being loaned to Trabzonspor, his future remains fluid. The Turkish club are attempting to negotiate a fresh loan deal, with hopes of finalising arrangements before pre-season commences. Should those talks stall, he will report back for summer preparations at United, though a permanent exit appears the most likely outcome.
