Vitinha Rates Fernandes Among World's Elite Four Midfielders; Rice Left Out of Reckoning

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha has placed Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes among the planet's top four midfielders, though he notably excluded Arsenal's Declan Rice from his distinguished list.

Speaking to Canal 11, Vitinha constructed a quartet of elite operators, with Barcelona's Pedri leading the charge. "I would put Pedri at the top," Vitinha explained. "He is magical, it is spectacular to see him play. When you play against him, you understand him even better."

Completing his top four alongside the Barcelona star are his Portuguese teammate Fernandes and fellow countryman Joao Neves. "A top-three? I would go with Joao Neves and Bruno Fernandes. They are both on either side of me and Pedri. So, I don't have a top three but a top four," Vitinha said.

Fernandes has delivered a stellar campaign for United under interim boss Michael Carrick, contributing eight goals and 19 assists across 31 Premier League outings. The 31-year-old skipper has been instrumental in steering the Red Devils to third place and the brink of Champions League qualification.

Yet Vitinha's omission of Rice has drawn contrasting opinion from punditry circles. Former England and Tottenham striker Gary Lineker championed the Arsenal midfielder's case on The Rest is Football podcast, declaring him his standout candidate for the season's individual honours.

"I think he's the player of the season for me," Lineker said. "For me, it's probably him or maybe Declan Rice if Arsenal go on and manage to clinch the title. But at the moment, for me, to do what he's done this season… and he was still the standout player even when they were going through a rotten spell when they were really struggling under Ruben Amorim."

Lineker highlighted Rice's footballing intelligence and technical prowess. "I think he's got such a great footballing brain and technique. What a player, what a player!"

Not everyone is convinced of Fernandes' credentials for individual accolades, however. TalkSPORT's Adrian Durham dismissed suggestions that the United captain deserves Player of the Year consideration, particularly citing reservations about the weight placed on assist statistics.

"My tolerance level has peaked with people banging on, droning on, whining on about Bruno Fernandes and his assist stats," Durham stated. "And he's going to break some record or other apparently. First of all, assist stats. I mean, do they really mean that much? They're a little guide."

Durham questioned the quality underpinning Fernandes' statistical record. "Yes, you can use them, fine. But what was this assist? Was it a pass to somebody who smacked in a—anyway, besides that, let's just say Bruno Fernandes' assist stats should carry an asterisk."

The presenter concluded with characteristic bluntness: "Someone said to me the other day that Bruno Fernandes should be Player of the Year. I haven't laughed so much since I caught on video Alex Crook, the chief football correspondent, doing the YMCA in a bar near Wembley. And he's still paying me for keeping that video."
