Mainoo Agrees Five-Year Deal at Manchester United as Carrick Praises Midfield Resurgence

Kobbie Mainoo is set to commit his future to Manchester United after the club reached a verbal agreement on a five-year contract extension, according to reports.

The England international midfielder has undergone quite the turnaround since Ruben Amorim's departure in January. After spending much of the opening half of the campaign warming the bench and facing speculation about potential moves to Napoli or loan exits elsewhere, Mainoo has become integral to Michael Carrick's plans.

Since Carrick's arrival as interim head coach, the 21-year-old has featured prominently in United's starting eleven, with the Red Devils accumulating an impressive record of eight victories in twelve matches. His latest outing came against Chelsea, where United secured a 1-0 triumph, and Mainoo's contribution did not go unnoticed.

Carrick was effusive in his assessment of the midfielder's performance: "I thought that was the best Kobbie has played, certainly since I've been back here. To step up and put so many phases to his game or sides to his game tonight. I thought he looked so composed, so calm, had a really good presence about him, defended well."

The interim boss continued his praise, highlighting the competitive nature of Mainoo's display: "Not easy when you've got really good players in and around you and it was a good battle between him and Cole Palmer. So we had to be right at it tonight, but Kobbie just showed so much quality and composure in a tough environment, really, in the end. Showed us what he can do."

Remarkably, Mainoo achieved this standout performance despite minimal preparation time. A minor injury had ruled him out of the previous match—a 2-1 defeat to Leeds—and his involvement in training leading up to the Chelsea clash was limited. "Kobbie didn't train an awful lot, really. He only did a little, really, a little bit on Thursday and a little bit more yesterday," Carrick explained, "so it wasn't an awful lot, so again credit to him for stepping in into that one."

The new contract represents a significant milestone for Mainoo, whose previous renewal came when he was just seventeen years old. His representatives have been progressing negotiations in recent discussions, and the emerging terms reflect his elevated status within the squad. The midfielder is expected to pocket around £150,000 per week—equating to £6.76m annually or £33.8m across the five-year duration.

United are keen to formalise the agreement before the campaign concludes. Mainoo's recent recall to the England squad for World Cup preparations underscores his rising prominence at both club and international level.
