Onana Gets Fresh Start Chance as United Backtrack on Loan Exit

Manchester United have had a change of heart regarding Andre Onana's future, with the goalkeeper set to be given a genuine opportunity to battle for his No 1 spot upon his return from Turkey next May.

The Cameroon international was shipped out on a season-long loan to Trabzonspor following a string of costly errors during the 2024/25 campaign that left supporters questioning his credentials. However, rather than permanently moving him on, the club have now decided to allow Onana a chance to reclaim his position.

The backdrop to this decision involves significant summer recruitment activity at Old Trafford. United spent over £200m overhauling their squad, with goalkeeper recruitment forming a key component. Belgian stopper Senne Lammels arrived from Royal Antwerp for £18.1m on deadline day, whilst Altay Bayindir remained as a secondary option.

Onana's arrival from Inter Milan in 2023 came at a hefty £43.8m price tag, but his inconsistency has prompted the rethink. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano had suggested earlier this month that a permanent exit seemed likely, citing financial considerations around the keeper's substantial wages as a potential obstacle to any deal.

Yet The Guardian's reporting indicates a shift in thinking. Onana is determined to prove himself worthy of another run in the side, with the club willing to afford him that opportunity. The challenge he faces is formidable, however – Lammels has impressed during his initial spell, meaning Onana cannot simply waltz back into the team.

The goalkeeper's plight reflects broader issues at United, as former Ajax teammate Edwin van der Sar recently highlighted. The legendary custodian acknowledged Onana possesses elite qualities in his distribution and reflexes, but lamented the occasional lapses in concentration that undermine his overall performance.

Van der Sar suggested the instability surrounding United's defensive setup in recent years – with constant changes to personnel and coaching staff – has made it difficult for incoming players to settle and flourish. The lack of continuity in the back four, midfield, and management positions has hampered numerous arrivals over the past eight or nine seasons, he argued, with Onana merely the latest to struggle under such circumstances.
