United Set for Midfield Overhaul: Ederson and Fernandes Deals Gaining Momentum

Manchester United are gearing up for a substantial midfield revamp this summer, with moves for two key targets now gathering serious pace.

The Red Devils have opted not to extend Casemiro's contract, freeing the 34-year-old Brazilian to depart on a free transfer. Despite a stellar campaign this season, the veteran's age means United are keen to inject fresh vitality into their engine room. Compounding matters, Manuel Ugarte—who arrived for £50.5million—is heading for the exit door after failing to justify his price tag.

With those departures confirmed, the club faces a pressing need to rebuild their midfield ranks. A move for their primary target, Elliot Anderson, has evaporated with Manchester City winning that particular race, forcing United to pivot their attention elsewhere.

Enter Ederson and Mateus Fernandes. The Atalanta midfielder appears closest to a move, with negotiations already at an advanced stage. Reports suggest a deal could reach £43million, with the Brazilian ready to commit to a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

Fernandes, the 21-year-old West Ham prospect, is meanwhile the subject of intensifying discussions. United have moved into pole position in the race for his signature after ramping up contact with his representatives. Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid all harbour interest, but Carrick's side hold the advantage through groundwork already completed on a potential agreement.

The Portuguese midfielder is understandably keen on the prospect, particularly given the chance to link up with fellow countryman Bruno Fernandes and play Champions League football. West Ham's relegation has also shifted the financial dynamics—he's now valued at between €50-60million (£43-52million), well below the £80million previously touted.

A move for Fernandes is expected to follow Ederson's arrival, with both transactions edging closer to completion. Should finances permit, United are even eyeing a third midfield addition: Southampton's Shea Charles, with a £20million package reportedly under consideration as a backup option.

The summer spending spree at Old Trafford is shaping up to be one of the window's more ambitious rebuilding efforts.
