Ratcliffe Eyes Midfield Rebuild: Four Premier League Targets Worth £190m in Summer Plans

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is plotting a significant midfield reconstruction at Manchester United, with the club having identified four top-flight options as potential summer acquisitions.

The Red Devils invested heavily in their forward line during the previous summer window, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko in a spending spree that exceeded £200million. That overhaul has yielded dividends on the pitch, though managerial upheaval saw Ruben Amorim depart the club last month.

The midfield department, however, remains a concern. The club failed to secure additional central reinforcement last summer despite their intentions to do so, leaving the department stretched. With Casemiro set to depart when his contract expires in the coming months, the need to bolster this area has become increasingly urgent.

Four Premier League stars have caught United's eye: Brighton's Carlos Baleba (valued at £52million), Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson (£52million), Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton (£52million), and Wolves' Joao Gomes (£34.6million).

The club previously attempted to prise Baleba away from the Amex during the previous transfer window, only to balk at Brighton's £100million valuation. However, the midfielder's continued development this season means United remain keen, whilst also monitoring the alternatives.

According to reporting from Sky Sports, Ratcliffe has signalled his willingness to sanction two midfield signings ahead of next season. The club's approach remains methodical and data-driven, with midfield identified as the primary area for summer investment.

"If all of the club's big targets became available in January they would jump at it, but not by paying over the odds," Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett explained on deadline day. "Most clubs feel if you go for a big name in January (unless they are due to be out of contract), you pay a premium."

Anderson appears to be the leading candidate, with talk of valuations exceeding £100million. The Forest midfielder represents the type of acquisition that fits the club's long-term vision—a player capable of adding both quality and longevity to their midfield ranks.
