Mainoo Gets Fresh Lease of Life Under Carrick as United Weigh Neves Move

Michael Carrick's arrival at Old Trafford has already yielded a significant shift in fortunes for Kobbie Mainoo, with the midfielder now firmly entrenched in United's plans after enduring a frustrating spell under Ruben Amorim.

Mainoo made his first Premier League start of the campaign on Saturday as United dismantled Manchester City 2-0 in the Manchester Derby—a stark contrast to his previous role as a bit-part player. During Amorim's tenure, the academy product was restricted to 11 substitute outings in the league, with the former manager making clear that Bruno Fernandes held the keys to the starting midfield berth.

Those circumstances sparked speculation that Mainoo might seek pastures new in January, with United reportedly willing to entertain an exit. However, transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano confirms the club have now had a complete rethink. Carrick's "instant trust" in the 19-year-old has proved the catalyst, with Mainoo's contract position likely to remain under discussion as talks progress.

Romano noted on X that Mainoo had been exploring loan options to guarantee regular football and continue his development, rather than contemplating a permanent departure from the club.

The January window may yet see United dip into the market, though pragmatism appears to be the watchword. Having prioritised attacking reinforcements over the summer, the club are minded to hold their nerve unless a genuine opportunity materialises. A summer rebuild looks increasingly likely to be the priority.

One name on the radar is Ruben Neves, the former Wolves midfielder currently plying his trade at Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. The Portuguese midfielder's contract runs until June, creating an opening for interested parties. Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke suggests Neves would welcome a return to Europe, and Manchester United specifically.

"He would be a good fit for United," O'Rourke explained. "He can play in that defensive midfield role, but I don't think the Saudi Pro League club are that open to letting him leave."

The stumbling block remains financial. Al-Hilal are demanding approximately £20 million for Neves, with his wage package adding further complexity to any potential deal. The Saudi outfit are reluctant to part with their midfielder, making this a thorny negotiation should United choose to pursue it seriously.
