United Close In On £116m Midfield Overhaul With Ederson Deal Nearly Sealed

Manchester United are preparing for a transformative summer window, targeting a pair of midfield signings as they reshape their engine room following Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's imminent exit.

The Red Devils had their sights set on Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson months back, but Manchester City's dominance in that race forced the club to pivot swiftly. Rather than dwell on disappointment, United's hierarchy have zeroed in on alternative targets with considerable ambition.

The Ederson deal appears virtually complete. SportItalia reports a 'full agreement' exists between United and Atalanta, with the Serie A side accepting an initial offer of €48 million plus €5 million in performance bonuses—totalling €53 million (£46 million). The transfer is in its final stages, with the Brazilian midfielder primed to travel to England imminently to complete formalities under Michael Carrick's management.

TEAMtalk have corroborated that Ederson has already committed to the move, with United 'increasingly serious' about getting the paperwork done. A verbal offer was tabled on Friday, followed by intensive negotiations with Atalanta. When Ederson sat out Atalanta's final fixture against Fiorentina, manager Raffaele Palladino explained: "It was a choice agreed with the player because there is something happening on the transfer market. The fact that a player like him is being followed by such an important club should be a source of pride."

The second prong of this operation focuses on West Ham's Mateus Fernandes. United have accelerated their pursuit with fresh discussions involving the Hammers, with indications that the 21-year-old has earmarked Old Trafford as his preferred destination. His admiration for captain Bruno Fernandes—a fellow Portuguese international—appears to be a significant draw, with reports suggesting he views joining United as a dream move.

The valuation hinges on West Ham's league status. Should they remain in the Premier League, Fernandes' price tag sits between £70 million and £80 million. Relegation would dramatically reduce that figure. United have leapfrogged rival suitors including Arsenal to establish themselves as frontrunners for his signature.

Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian offered insight into the dynamics at play, noting that if Fernandes were to remain in English football, United represent his likeliest destination. He highlighted the connections through recruitment chief Kyle Macaulay—who previously worked at West Ham and brought Fernandes to the club last summer before joining United—and Jason Wilcox, whose Southampton pedigree aligns with Fernandes' background at the south-coast club.

Earlier speculation suggested United might pursue a Ederson-Sandro Tonali pairing from Newcastle, yet current indications point firmly toward the Ederson-Fernandes combination materialising instead.

The double acquisition would represent significant business for United's midfield reconstruction efforts this summer.
