Manchester United have their sights set on Brian Brobbey, the Dutch frontman whose explosive performances at the World Cup have turned heads across Europe's elite clubs.

The 24-year-old Sunderland striker has become a wanted man this summer after establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Black Cats' unlikely Europa League qualification. United, along with Tottenham, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, are all mulling potential summer approaches for the Netherlands international.

Brobbey's journey to the Premier League began just nine months ago when Sunderland splashed out £25m to Ajax in September 2025. After a settling-in period, he evolved into Sunderland's main attacking weapon, contributing seven goals and an assist across 31 league appearances as the club engineered a remarkable return to the top flight.

His World Cup form has only amplified the clamour for his signature. The powerful forward terrorised Sweden's backline in the Netherlands' second group fixture, bagging a brace in a devastating 5-1 victory that underscored his credentials as a genuine top-level talent.

What's caught scouts' attention goes beyond mere goal-scoring. Brobbey's physical dominance, pressing intensity, and increasingly assured touch in possession have impressed observers, who reckon there remains untapped potential in his game. The striker's willingness to use his considerable strength to manhandle defenders into submission creates the space he needs to be dangerous.

United have long harboured an interest in Brobbey, having monitored him during Erik ten Hag's tenure. Back then, he was viewed as a raw prospect; now he represents a more complete proposition.

The Sunderland Standoff

Don't expect a quick exit from the Stadium of Light, though. Sunderland have made abundantly clear they view Brobbey as integral to their long-term ambitions and have no desire to cash in this summer. That said, the Sunderland Echo previously suggested that offers hovering around the £40-50m mark might spark board-level discussions.

For United, the striker search remains a pressing concern. They're hunting for a forward capable of challenging Benjamin Sesko without stunting his development. Joshua Zirkzee appears destined for a Serie A return, leaving a vacancy up front.

Jean-Philippe Mateta represents an intriguing alternative—proven in English football without the wage demands of marquee names like Victor Osimhen or Dusan Vlahovic. There's even been chatter about a sentimental reunion with Danny Welbeck, the veteran striker eyeing a return to Old Trafford.
