United's £250m War Chest: Fernandes in Sights After Ederson Deal

Manchester United's summer spending plans are taking shape as INEOS prepares for what could be a significant rebuild under Michael Carrick's watch.

The Red Devils boss has overseen a remarkable turnaround since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, steering the club to third-place Premier League finishes and Champions League qualification. Now, with the finances in place, they're ready to back him in the transfer market.

The numbers tell an encouraging story. BBC Sport reports that United will have approximately £250m available for summer acquisitions, a figure boosted by the club's decision to pay off £110m on their revolving credit facility since the end of their reporting period on 31 March. That facility remains crucial to funding transfer activity.

Carrick's shopping list is already taking shape. A left-back, left-winger, and at least two midfielders are priorities, with potential interest in defensive reinforcement and forward options as well.

First through the door appears to be Atalanta's Ederson, the Brazilian midfielder, with his move set to cost £35m. That leaves the bulk of the budget intact for further business.

The next target is emerging as West Ham's Mateus Fernandes. Reports suggest United are keen on the Portuguese midfielder and are planning an approach soon. However, there's a catch: whilst West Ham are reportedly seeking as much as £80m following their Championship relegation, United have set a £50m ceiling on their offer. The Hammers, sources indicate, will likely shop the player around to generate competitive interest and potentially drive up the price.

The Middlesbrough Alternative

Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe has thrown another name into the mix—Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney. Hinchcliffe reckons the young midfielder "fits the bill" for United's needs, suggesting the club are targeting talented younger players capable of developing alongside elite company. Hackney's loyalty to Middlesbrough is noted, but a move to a Champions League club could prove difficult to resist, particularly if mid-table Premier League offers come knocking.
