The strategy paid dividends—the side that ranked fifth-lowest for goals in the previous campaign now sits third for scoring this season. Yet the glaring omission was midfield, an acknowledged weak point that haunted the club throughout the campaign before.

That oversight appears set for correction. Tonali, Anderson, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton have all circulated in transfer gossip, but the Newcastle man has crystallised as United's primary focus. The Italian midfielder has impressed of late, finding the net for his country against Northern Ireland and delivering consistently for the Magpies.
