Palmer's £80m Price Tag Set as Alonso Prepares Chelsea Overhaul

Xabi Alonso's arrival at Chelsea comes with a hefty financial headache. The former Liverpool icon will take the reins at Stamford Bridge with the club nursing wounds from a torrid 2025/26 campaign—two managerial sackings and no European football to show for it.

Unlike his predecessors, Alonso holds the title of manager rather than head coach, handing him considerably more sway over the transfer window. That power will likely be needed, given Chelsea's precarious financial position. The club faces potential sanctions relating to their extravagant spending in recent seasons, and sources suggest they'll need to offload at least one marquee name to balance the books.

Only Moises Caicedo appears truly untouchable at the Bridge, meaning everyone else—including Cole Palmer—could theoretically move on. The England international's market value sits just under £30m on the books, but Chelsea won't be letting him go on the cheap. Should interested parties come knocking, the asking price would start at £80m.

Palmer's future has become something of a carousel lately. Manchester United have been persistently linked with the 22-year-old, who grew up supporting the Red Devils. Intriguingly, Manchester City have also reportedly tabled an offer to bring him back following Enzo Maresca's appointment—a curious turn given Palmer's recent spell at the Etihad before his move to Chelsea.

The playmaker has publicly downplayed exit talk, but whispers of discontent have persisted throughout a disappointing season at Stamford Bridge.

Chris Waddle reckons United should make Palmer a priority. The former England winger told BoyleSports that Erik ten Cag—sorry, Michael Carrick needs to shift several players off the wage bill first: Casemiro, Joshua Zirkzee, and Rasmus Hojlund among them. Only then will the funds materialise to pursue targets like Palmer.

"If that frees up the money to go and get people like Cole Palmer and get them really working on the ball and doing what we know they can do in possession then he could become a great player again," Waddle said.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are plotting an ambitious rebuild. They're targeting at least two, ideally three, elite signings capable of making an immediate impact in Alonso's first team. Shifting Palmer's wages would certainly help fund that ambition.
