Rashford's Barcelona Reprieve: Why United Must Demand More Than Goals if He Returns

The prospect of Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United hinges on more than Barcelona's ability to stump up £26m. According to former Red Lee Sharpe, it's about whether the winger is willing to rediscover the work ethic that made him a genuine force.

Rashford's loan switch to the Catalan club last summer has been a revelation. Ten goals and 13 assists across 34 appearances in all competitions represent the kind of numbers that would ordinarily rubber-stamp a permanent deal. Yet Barcelona's chronic financial constraints mean nothing is certain, opening the door to an Old Trafford homecoming that may not be universally welcomed.

Sharpe's verdict is refreshingly blunt: Rashford can return, but only if he's prepared to deliver the complete package. "I love watching Marcus Rashford when he's in full pomp, playing well, enjoying his football and working hard for the team – off the ball as well as on it," the former United winger told GOAL. "If he feels like he could come back and be the Marcus Rashford of old and is prepared to give 100 per cent in every game, then I'd take him back in a heartbeat."

The caveat is equally pointed. The form that preceded his Barcelona departure – inconsistent, occasionally disengaged – would not be tolerated on his return. "If he's going to come in and be a bit lazy and a bit half-hearted, like he was before he left, then I don't want him," Sharpe continued. "I don't think United can carry a player like that. If he wants to come back and work his socks off and produce magic like he was a few seasons ago, then I'd be delighted to see him back."

Whether Rashford chooses to return, and crucially how he approaches that return, rests entirely on his own mindset. Sharpe acknowledged the unknown variables: has his year in Spain provided genuine rejuvenation, or merely whetted his appetite to stay abroad? Would he be content working under Michael Carrick, or does he harbour deeper ambitions elsewhere?

The answer may matter less than his willingness to graft. A string of strong performances and visible commitment would likely earn back the Old Trafford faithful. But United cannot afford passengers, no matter how talented. For Rashford, the real test won't be whether he can return – it's whether he's willing to earn it.
