Saha Backs United Swoop for Fernandez Over Real Madrid as Summer Midfield Overhaul Looms

Manchester United should pounce on the opportunity to sign Enzo Fernandez before Real Madrid get their hands on him, according to former Red Devils striker Louis Saha, who views the Chelsea midfielder as an unmissable prospect for the summer window.

The Old Trafford outfit have already pencilled in significant resources for bolstering Michael Carrick's midfield ranks, with at least two fresh faces on the agenda. Fernandez, the Argentina international, could well become available as he continues to court interest from the Spanish giants, though recent circumstances at Stamford Bridge may have shifted the landscape.

The 23-year-old found himself in hot water for remarks directed at Real Madrid during the most recent international break, leading to his temporary exile from Chelsea's setup. However, he has since forced his way back into contention and made an immediate impact by netting the decisive goal in the Blues' FA Cup semi-final victory over Leeds United.

Saha reckons United should capitalize on any potential opening. Speaking to Betinia, he outlined his reasoning: "He doesn't necessarily mirror Bruno Fernandes' approach, but there's genuine scope for him to thrive in that midfield. The composure he possesses, his tactical intelligence, and his range of passing all mark him out as a player of substance. While he's not quite a defensive anchor in the Caicedo mould, he combines bite with genuine technical quality. If the opportunity arose, it would be a straightforward decision for Manchester United to make."

Fernandez's recent conduct has drawn criticism from certain quarters, however. Tim Sherwood took issue with his demeanor following Chelsea's 3-0 reverse, when the midfielder stood facing the away support with arms outstretched in what appeared to be a dismissive gesture. The Sky Sports pundit was unsparing in his assessment, questioning whether such behaviour befits a player of leadership credentials.

"This isn't the sort of character you'd want wearing the armband," Sherwood said. "He's clearly eyeing the exit, but posturing after the whistle isn't leadership. You lead when the match is being played, when you're rallying your teammates and implementing your manager's instructions. Instead, you get the sense he's deflecting blame elsewhere rather than galvanizing the group."

Sherwood proceeded to deliver a broader critique of Chelsea's current malaise, highlighting systematic deficiencies across the squad and lamenting the absence of the commanding figures who defined the club's glory years.

Elsewhere, United's midfield recruitment hunt has also drawn attention to Aurélien Tchouaméni, though Rio Ferdinand expressed reservations about his availability. The former defender acknowledged the Real Madrid man's exceptional pedigree—his performances in major tournaments, his physicality, and his command of English all represent significant assets—but questioned whether the Spanish club would realistically sanction his departure.

Ferdinand also referenced other potential targets, suggesting that Premier League-proven operators like Anderson could represent shrewd acquisitions, whilst cautioning that availability remains the crucial variable in any summer planning.
