Manchester United Ready to Splash £150m on Midfield Overhaul This Summer

Manchester United have made no secret of their intention to transform their midfield this summer, earmarking approximately £150 million to bring in three new central midfielders. The blueprint for spending is now clear, with the club having a precise allocation for each tier of recruit.

The Red Devils' hierarchy faced considerable scrutiny twelve months ago for neglecting midfield reinforcement, instead channelling resources into attacking personnel. Yet that gamble has paid dividends – United have climbed from fifth-lowest to third-highest scorers in the Premier League this season, suggesting the offensive investment strategy has borne fruit.

Nevertheless, the midfield cupboard remains bare. Casemiro's departure on a free transfer looms at season's end, while Manuel Ugarte faces the exit door with a sale anticipated. That double blow necessitates urgent action in the transfer market.

The spending plan breaks down as follows: £80 million has been reserved for a marquee central midfielder to fill the Casemiro void, £40 million allocated for Ugarte's replacement, and a final £20 million to add depth to the ranks. A handful of names have emerged as potential targets across each price bracket.

In the premium tier, United are eyeing Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni as possible £80 million acquisitions.

The £40 million bracket includes West Ham's Mateus Fernandes alongside Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams. Southampton's Shea Charles appears the sole candidate mooted for the £20 million slot.

Ferdinand Backs Anderson Push

Rio Ferdinand has publicly advocated for Anderson to become United's priority this summer. The club legend believes the Forest midfielder possesses the precise attributes the Red Devils require, dismissing recent form concerns surrounding Baleba.

"Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he's a wonderful player," Ferdinand declared on his YouTube channel.

The former United defender argues that Anderson represents the complete package – not merely in terms of ability, but character and playing style. Ferdinand emphasises the need for a midfielder capable of covering ground dynamically, providing robustness and strength whilst driving the team forward.

"I think Elliot Anderson is the right type not only of player but character, I think he'd be a good addition to the squad," Ferdinand explained. "Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes."

Whilst Ferdinand acknowledged the talents of Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, he maintains that United's best path forward involves securing an all-action midfielder of Anderson's ilk – though he cryptically hinted at other young prospects on his radar.
