United Eyeing Fernandes Bargain as Madrid Circle and West Ham Faces Relegation Reality

Manchester United are preparing to exploit a sliding valuation for Mateus Fernandes this summer, even as Real Madrid circle the 21-year-old midfielder.

The Old Trafford club have already secured Ederson from Atalanta for £35m and are actively hunting further midfield reinforcements following Casemiro's exit at contract expiry and Manuel Ugarte's anticipated departure.

Fernandes, signed by West Ham from Southampton just twelve months ago for £40m, has rocketed up United's wish list. Intelligence from earlier in the week suggested the player's representatives remain bullish about orchestrating a move to Manchester.

That enthusiasm persists despite competition from Jose Mourinho, who assumes control at the Bernabéu following Florentino Perez's successful re-election as Madrid president. Mourinho has personally lobbied for Fernandes to join the Spanish giants.

West Ham's asking price sits at £80m—a hefty sum for a player desperate to escape following the club's Premier League relegation. However, former Hammers scout Mick Brown reckons that figure will inevitably crumble as the window deepens and Fernandes' determination to depart crystallises.

"It's going to be hard for West Ham to keep Fernandes," Brown explained to Football Insider. "Ideally for them, they would keep hold of him and he'd be a huge part of the team that gets them back up into the Premier League. But it's not as easy as that, it's extremely difficult when clubs get relegated and more often than not they're forced to let them go because they can't afford to keep them."

Brown believes the midfielder's quality and profile virtually guarantee top-tier suitors will come calling. "He was one of their best players in the Premier League and by all accounts did a very good job, so there's going to be top-level interest," he continued.

"As the window goes on and it becomes clear he wants to move on, that price tag is going to drop, and a club like Man United could look to take advantage of that. United are certainly among his admirers, so they'll be keeping an eye on his situation and could make a move if a deal becomes realistic."

The arithmetic is straightforward: a young, proven Premier League performer unwilling to drop into the Championship, combined with a selling club facing financial constraints in the second tier, typically produces a buyer's market by late summer.
