United's £230m War Chest: Guimaraes and Santos Top Midfield Wishlist

Manchester United's summer spending plans have been laid bare, and it appears INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have earmarked a substantial war chest for a midfield overhaul that could reshape the Old Trafford engine room.

After a busy attacking recruitment drive last summer—welcoming Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo to bolster their forward options—the focus has shifted decisively to the middle of the park. With Casemiro's departure confirmed for the end of the season, United are plotting an ambitious reshuffle to fill the Brazilian's considerable void.

The club's transfer budget will exceed £230 million, with around £80 million potentially allocated specifically to Bruno Guimaraes as a direct replacement for the departing midfielder. United have already made informal contact with Newcastle over the 22-year-old, viewing him as the ideal solution to their midfield crisis.

Transfer analyst Ben Jacobs has lent credence to the pursuit, revealing that Casemiro himself has championed his compatriot's credentials to United. Guimaraes, despite his public displays of loyalty to Newcastle, has previously shown openness to a move within English football, making a switch to Old Trafford theoretically achievable—though the Magpies would demand a premium for their prized asset.

The Newcastle midfielder isn't alone on United's radar, however. The Red Devils have also emerged as frontrunners to land Andrey Santos, the 21-year-old Chelsea midfielder currently on loan at Strasbourg. United are said to be leading the charge for Santos, though Juventus remain monitoring his situation.

Chelsea's valuation sits at £50 million for the young Brazilian, whose market value stands at €40 million according to TransferMarkt. The Blues' board, despite Santos' improved form under Liam Rosenior's stewardship, do not regard him as untouchable—opening the door for an exit this summer.

Should United succeed in both pursuits, they would inject significant fresh talent into their midfield while adhering to their substantial spending plan. With Casemiro's exit confirmed and the squad crying out for reinforcement in that area, the coming months promise plenty of movement at Old Trafford.
