Manchester United's search for midfield reinforcements this summer has hit a familiar snag: money. While personal terms with West Ham's Mateus Fernandes present no obstacle, it's the Hammers' eye-watering £80m valuation that threatens to scupper the whole affair.

The Red Devils have already wrapped up the signing of Atalanta's Ederson, with the Brazilian having undergone his medical in New York just over a week back. With Manuel Ugarte earmarked for departure and Casemiro having departed on a free transfer, Erik ten Hag's side are in the market for defensive midfield reinforcement—potentially two more additions to the engine room.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson had been their primary target, but the England international looks destined for Manchester City, who are prepared to splash serious cash to land the midfielder. That's turned attention to Fernandes, the West Ham operator who managed three goals and four assists across 36 Premier League outings last season.

According to reports, United and Fernandes have already agreed personal terms. The Athletic's assessment suggests this won't be the sticking point. Rather, it's West Ham's refusal to budge from their £80m asking price that could prove the deal-breaker. United have shown reluctance to meet that figure, though should a rival match or exceed it, the Old Trafford hierarchy may find themselves forced into a difficult decision. A formal bid remains forthcoming, though one is anticipated.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have begun circling. The Reds made an enquiry about Fernandes a fortnight ago to assess what would be required to prise him away from the London Stadium this summer. No official approach or bid has materialised since, but Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Merseysiders did indeed make contact.

Romano revealed that Liverpool's call came two weeks prior, with the club keen to understand both the player's situation and the financial terms involved. The transfer expert suggested Fernandes will command a fee exceeding £85m, with multiple clubs—including Tottenham—now in the mix. For Liverpool, it represents another option as they weigh their midfield requirements heading into the new campaign.
