Maguire Open to Serie A Exit as Three Italian Giants Circle United Defender

Harry Maguire is weighing up his options, with reports suggesting the Manchester United defender would entertain a switch to Italy during the January transfer window.

The 32-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign at Old Trafford, restricted to just four Premier League starts. A thigh complaint sidelined him for several weeks, and opportunities have been thin on the ground despite a more productive 2024-25 season that saw him clock up 40 appearances across all competitions.

According to transfer correspondent Marco Conterio, three of Serie A's heavyweight clubs are actively investigating the prospect of bringing Maguire to Italy. Inter, Napoli and Fiorentina are all understood to be seriously examining his profile, with a view to securing him on reduced terms before his contract expires at the summer's end.

Maguire, it's claimed, has indicated he would be open to the prospect of a continental adventure.

The timing of Michael Carrick's appointment as interim manager—replacing Ruben Amorim—could prove pivotal. The pair have history, with Maguire previously singing Carrick's praises following his temporary spell in charge back in 2021. "Michael is a really likable man, all the lads respect him and he's been amazing with each and every one of us. We're going to miss him," Maguire said at that time.

Carrick himself has been effusive in his praise of the centre-back's character and resilience. Speaking as a pundit earlier this season, he remarked: "I'm so pleased for Harry Maguire. He's done some really good things for the football club, and he's been through the mill at times as well. He's had some unfair times. But he's come back unbelievably well and turned into a leader and a real talisman. It takes a lot when you're up against it. There's no hiding place at a club like Manchester United. It's fantastic."

Whether Carrick's appointment will convince Maguire to stay put remains to be seen, though his previous comments hint at a desire to retain the experienced defender.

Elsewhere at United, talk of departures has swirled around Kobbie Mainoo, Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte, though ESPN's Mark Ogden expects the club to remain relatively quiet on the transfer front. Despite their indifferent form, United have no intention of bringing in fresh faces, with Carrick set to work with the squad already at his disposal.

The club is mindful of midfield reinforcements—with Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Brighton's Carlos Baleba all on their radar—but none of those targets are available this month. Consequently, short-term fixes are off the agenda.
