Van de Ven in Man Utd's Sights as Spurs Departure Looms

Manchester United have emerged as serious contenders in the race to sign Tottenham's Micky van de Ven, with the prospect of a deal gathering momentum heading into the summer window.

The Red Devils are preparing to splash as much as £150m on up to three new midfielders alone, whilst also keeping tabs on potential reinforcements at left-back and left-wing. However, centre-back remains a nagging concern for the Old Trafford hierarchy, and Van de Ven has become a name generating genuine interest at the club.

Despite Tottenham's recent revival—climbing out of the relegation zone following victory over Aston Villa—there's a growing sense that survival in the Premier League may not be sufficient to retain their star performers. Football Insider reports that Van de Ven is "growing increasingly likely to leave" this summer.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, who maintains strong connections at Old Trafford, has been made aware of the club's interest in the Dutch international. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown outlined the thinking behind the pursuit.

"Attracting players to Manchester United has never presented a challenge," Brown explained. "However, securing Champions League football next season will provide a significant financial injection and strengthen our hand when recruiting."

Brown highlighted the defensive conundrum facing Erik ten Hag's side. With Harry Maguire committed for another 12 months and younger prospects Heaven and Yoro showing promise, the real issue centres on the reliability of senior options. "Martinez and De Ligt have struggled with consistency and injury problems," Brown noted.

"For next season, they're after an experienced, dependable centre-back to partner Maguire. That's precisely why Micky van de Ven interests them. He might depart Tottenham regardless of their league status because he's ambitious and wants to test himself at a bigger club. United can provide that platform."

Brown added: "He'd be an ambitious signing, but he fills a position requiring attention, so it's definitely something worth pursuing."

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has also championed Van de Ven as a potential acquisition. Speaking to Paddy Power, Butt highlighted the defender's technical qualities and physical attributes.

"Van de Ven is an excellent player," Butt said. "Having a left-footed centre-back provides tremendous balance. He's similar to Martinez in terms of distribution and passing range, but quicker, taller, and more powerful. I'd be targeting him immediately."

Butt suggested that relegation could present an opportunity for United to acquire Tottenham's prized assets at reduced cost. "Once they drop down, other clubs will be circling to snap up their players cheaply," he reasoned. "They'll be forced to offload because the wage bill becomes unsustainable, and I'd wager most contracts lack relegation clauses."
