Man Utd Set to Back Midfield Overhaul With £100m Commitment; Fernandes Deal on Track

Manchester United are gearing up for a significant midfield revamp this summer, with plans to deploy a further £100m on fresh talent as they look to strengthen a department left depleted by Casemiro's exit.

The Old Trafford hierarchy have already moved swiftly in the transfer market, wrapping up a deal for Ederson Silva from Atalanta worth approximately £38m, with the move expected to be rubber-stamped at the beginning of July. But that's merely the opening gambit.

The Red Devils have now stolen a march on Arsenal and other suitors in pursuit of West Ham's Matheus Fernandes, the 21-year-old who proved himself one of the Hammers' standout performers throughout their doomed relegation campaign. His emergence has caught the attention of several heavyweight clubs, yet United appear to have positioned themselves favourably in the chase.

The club's recruitment team has narrowed their focus to a three-man shortlist for the remaining midfield additions, with Fernandes joined by Carlos Baleba and Alex Scott as priority targets. The ambitious spending plans hinge on one key condition: the sale of Manuel Ugarte, though there's no guarantee the midfielder will depart. Head coach Michael Carrick is reportedly open to retaining Ugarte, mirroring United's previous handling of Harry Maguire and Scott McTomninay when similar squad decisions were required.

Interestingly, United have cooled their pursuit of Elliot Anderson, freeing up resources to concentrate elsewhere.
