Man Utd to Make Swift Midfield Calls as Ederson Emerges as Budget Option

Manchester United are poised to move quickly on their midfield recruitment this summer, having identified the need to bolster their options alongside Kobbie Mainoo, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

The club splashed out over £200m on fresh talent last year, concentrating their firepower on attacking reinforcements. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo all arrived at Old Trafford, and the goal-scoring improvements have been evident. Yet sections of the fanbase were frustrated by the failure to address midfield, with only tentative approaches made for Brighton's Carlos Baleba and England's Conor Gallagher.

Neither materialised, leaving that glaring gap unfilled. Now, with significant resources earmarked for the upcoming window, United are preparing to land at least two fresh midfield operators. Names including Baleba, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson – himself a target for Manchester City – and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali have circulated. However, Romano has identified Atalanta's Ederson as a potentially shrewder financial proposition, available in the €40-45m bracket.

"Man United also like Sandro Tonali, he's another name they have on the shortlist," Romano explained. "Ederson from Atalanta could be a backup option in the list of Manchester United. So there is plenty of names, but Man United will very soon decide. Don't forget Carlos Baleba, who has been on the list of Man United since summer 2025, and I think could still be an interesting name to follow for this transfer window."

Ederson has earned a reputation as the world's finest defensive midfielder, yet former Arsenal player Perry Groves believes Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton represents a superior alternative for the Red Devils' immediate requirements.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Groves waxed lyrical about Wharton's technical prowess and footballing intelligence. "You watch him play and he's like a Rolls Royce of a player," Groves said. "He looks like he's never sprinting. He just sort of jogs about but he's always in the right position. His awareness in the game is unreal."

The Palace midfielder's ability to thread passes through the lines – whether into Jean-Philippe Mateta or Ismaila Sarr – caught Groves's eye, and he believes Wharton could slot seamlessly into the Mainoo partnership as Casemiro departs.

"If you're Manchester United and they have said, obviously, Casemiro is going, he's got to be on your radar," Groves added. "When you're playing in that centre midfield in the modern-day game you've got to be athletic which Adam Wharton is and you've got to have vision and you've got to be very calm and composed which he is."

Groves ultimately suggested the club's recruitment team should be eyeing both Wharton and Elliot Anderson as the ideal pairing to freshen United's engine room. "Not a bad choice really," he concluded.
