United's Tonali Plan: Shift Ugarte to Fund Midfield Upgrade

Manchester United could have found an elegant solution to softening the financial blow of a summer move for Sandro Tonali—ship Manuel Ugarte out the door and let Newcastle fund the operation.

According to reports, the Red Devils knocked back a January loan offer from Newcastle for Ugarte, the 24-year-old midfielder who has barely featured this season with just seven Premier League appearances to his name. With United actively hunting for a buyer to move the former Sporting and PSG player on, Newcastle's interest presents a tidy opportunity to recoup funds while addressing their own midfield needs.

Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Napoli are also circling Ugarte, keeping United's options open.

The backdrop to all this is United's determined push to strengthen their midfield this summer. Casemiro's departure looms large—his contract expires at season's end—leaving a significant void alongside Kobbie Mainoo. The club is casting a wide net, with Tonali and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson among their primary targets, though Manchester City are sniffing around both players too.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest intelligence on United's Tonali pursuit. The midfielder remains on their radar following fresh contact made in February and March, with United's representatives reaching out to Tonali's camp to gauge Newcastle's asking price and conditions. "At the moment, United are not planning to pay anything crazy for Tonali," Romano explained. "If the price is right, he is a serious option, but they will not overspend."
