Manchester United are preparing to make waves in the transfer market, readying a substantial bid to lure Trent Alexander-Arnold away from Real Madrid this summer. The Red Devils have signalled their serious intent, with a Spanish outlet reporting that Old Trafford chiefs are 'especially active' in pursuing the 27-year-old and are preparing an offer in the region of €50m (£44m).

Alexander-Arnold's move to the Bernabeu last summer raised eyebrows across Europe. The former Liverpool right-back departed Merseyside on a free transfer after allowing his contract to expire, joining Madrid for just €10m (£8.7m). However, his debut campaign in La Liga has been far from the seamless transition he may have envisioned, with injury setbacks limiting his impact during his first season in Spanish football.

Those difficulties have sparked speculation about a potential Premier League return, with several clubs monitoring his situation. Yet transfer specialist Pete O'Rourke has previously suggested the defender remains committed to his Madrid project, insisting it would be surprising to see him depart so soon.

"Real Madrid, there are so many changes going on there — obviously a change of manager right now with Alvaro Arbeloa in charge — we don't know if he's going to be there long-term," O'Rourke explained. "There could be another managerial change in the summer and that's a clean slate for all the players. I'm sure Trent Alexander-Arnold right now is not giving up on his Real Madrid dream."

The Bernabeu hierarchy appears to share that sentiment. Despite the right-back's underwhelming first season, Madrid officials are said to maintain confidence in his potential, recognising that his adaptation to Spanish football requires additional time. Club insiders have made clear they harbour no intention of selling unless presented with an offer they simply cannot refuse — a statement that could prove problematic for United's ambitions.

Any move to Old Trafford would prove deeply unpopular among sections of the Anfield faithful. Alexander-Arnold was branded a "rat" by some Liverpool supporters for his departure, and he received a hostile reception upon his return to his former home in November. A switch to Manchester United would likely intensify those feelings considerably.

Wayne Rooney, the United legend, recently outlined what Alexander-Arnold must address to reach the elite tier of defending. "On the ball, he's one of the best in world football," Rooney said. "Off the ball, defensively, that's where he has to improve. That's where the question marks are on Trent. If he improves that, there's no doubt that he will be the best full-back in the world."
