Sheringham: Rashford 'Didn't Deserve' Barcelona Opportunity, But That's Probably Where He'll Stay

Teddy Sheringham has weighed in on Marcus Rashford's future, insisting the Manchester United winger was fortunate to land his Barcelona loan deal and forecasting where the England international will ultimately end up.

Rashford's path away from Old Trafford began when he departed on loan to Aston Villa midway through last season following a falling-out with then-manager Ruben Amorim. By summer, it became clear his time at United was effectively over, leading to a season-long loan arrangement with Barcelona.

The Spanish giants hold a €30m purchase option, though they've been attempting to renegotiate the terms given their precarious financial situation. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently clarified that the buyout clause remains valid through the end of the current campaign, dismissing reports suggesting it had expired in March.

According to Romano's latest update, Barcelona have already agreed personal terms with Rashford, with the player's representatives handling discussions behind the scenes. However, the club is pushing back against the full €30m fee, preferring to restructure the arrangement—potentially through another loan or alternative formula—while Manchester United are holding firm on receiving the complete payment upfront.

Hansi Flick has proven a significant admirer during Rashford's time in Catalonia, valuing his versatility and professionalism alongside his goal-scoring contributions. The winger impressed particularly when Barcelona faced Newcastle in the group stage, netting twice in that encounter.

Sheringham believes Rashford has seized the opportunity to reinvigorate his career. "He's got an unbelievable move—didn't deserve it—but he's gone there and changed his mentality," the United legend told BestBettingSites. "It seems like Barcelona want to sign him, so if they do, they probably will."

The former striker suggested this outcome would signal Rashford's reluctance to return to United. "That would make it quite clear he doesn't want to come back to United, so he'll probably end up getting what he wants," Sheringham added.

Rashford netted in Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid recently, though Flick remained characteristically cagey when pressed on the loanee's future prospects. "I'm very happy with Marcus.
