Manchester United Eye Seven-Strong Summer Overhaul as Tonali Deal Hinges on Price Drop

Manchester United are gearing up for a significant summer spending spree under new boss Michael Carrick, with plans to bring in between six and eight new faces across the pitch.

The Red Devils have already made progress on their first arrival, closing in on Ederson Silva, but the overhaul will extend far beyond that single capture. With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford, the club are determined to strengthen multiple departments.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has outlined the scope of United's ambitions, suggesting the squad could welcome anywhere from six to eight new players before next season kicks off.

"I'm of the firm impression that Man United are looking at a big summer with 6/7/8 signings coming in," Jacobs explained on United Stand.

The priorities are clear: United want two to three midfielders, a full-back—whether operating on the left or right flank—a centre-back despite Harry Maguire's recent contract extension, and potentially a new goalkeeper. Beyond central midfield, full-back and left-wing positions are particularly high on the recruitment wish list.

Midfield Overhaul Takes Centre Stage

The midfield remains the chief focus of United's summer business. Alongside Ederson, Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes have been mentioned as potential recruits. Jacobs expects at least one midfielder to bring proven Premier League experience to the table, with Aurélien Tchouameni flagged as a possible option, though his situation at Real Madrid remains fluid.

Elliot Anderson sits atop the midfield targets list, though Manchester City are actively pursuing the same player. Matheus Fernandes represents another avenue, and with West Ham's relegation from the Premier League, his valuation has shifted dramatically. The Hammers previously demanded double their initial £38m plus £4m investment, but the financial landscape has changed.

"Most clubs feel as if, due to West Ham's relegation, that Fernandes will be available for £50-60m," Jacobs noted, adding that Fernandes will "depart" the club following their drop down the divisions.

Despite West Ham lacking a relegation release clause, Jacobs expressed near certainty that the midfielder will leave. "Price-wise, it's clearly easier or better value for clubs interested after West Ham have gone down. Had they stayed up, they would have stuck to the we want double the 38+4m that they paid for him!"

Tonali Deal Dependent on Price Movement

While Tonali remains an appreciated target at Old Trafford, his arrival carries a significant caveat. United will only pursue a deal for the Newcastle midfielder if the Magpies lower their asking price. Currently, the fee stands as a sticking point in negotiations.

Jacobs suggested the Matheus Fernandes package is unlikely to begin with a figure starting in the £70m-plus range, signalling more realistic valuations across the market following West Ham's relegation.
