Ederson Deal Crumbles: Man Utd Gets Fresh Chance at Brazilian Midfielder

Manchester United may yet have a window to revisit their interest in Atalanta's Brazilian midfielder Ederson after his transfer to Atletico Madrid hit the rocks on multiple fronts.

The 26-year-old Serie A talent turned down several suitors, including United, when he verbally agreed personal terms with Madrid earlier this spring. But the move is now in serious trouble, with negotiations between all parties having ground to a halt.

United are actively hunting midfield reinforcements this summer, with Casemiro departing on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte facing a potential exit. The club's attention has been fixed on well-documented targets including Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Sandro Tonali.

Ederson's emergence as a possibility, however, offers an intriguing alternative. The Atalanta star was the subject of initial United interest before Atletico Madrid moved to the fore in their pursuit.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed in April that Atletico had secured verbal agreement with Ederson on personal terms, with negotiations ongoing over a fee in the €35-40 million bracket. The midfielder is currently under contract until June 2027.

Yet the deal has unravelled. Not only have Atletico and Ederson failed to convert their verbal understanding into a binding agreement, but the Spanish side increasingly appears unwilling to meet Atalanta's financial demands.

Atalanta are holding firm on a €45 million valuation, though they're keen to offload their midfielder. The complication is straightforward: with Ederson entering the final year of his contract come July, his market value should logically plummet. Why pay a premium now for a player who could be acquired for nothing in twelve months?

That logic, however, has failed to move negotiations forward. The clubs remain deadlocked, while fresh complications have emerged in talks with Ederson himself. What began as the Brazilian envisioning himself in Atletico's red and white at the Metropolitano has soured considerably in recent weeks, with a "clear setback" now blocking progress entirely.

Negotiations have stalled completely. Ederson remains hopeful of joining Atletico, but only at terms acceptable to him—a position that appears incompatible with Atletico's current stance.

For United, the impasse presents an opening. Should the Atletico deal collapse entirely, Ederson could represent a genuinely elite addition to their midfield arsenal, even if revisiting the opportunity after his initial rejection carries its own complications.
