United's Midfield Overhaul Hangs in Balance as Ugarte Injury Threatens Third Signing

Manchester United have wasted no time reshaping their engine room this summer, having already secured Ederson Silva from Atalanta in a deal worth around £38m. Yet their midfield reconstruction now faces an unexpected roadblock.

The departure of Casemiro combined with Manuel Ugarte's potential exit had left a gaping hole in United's midfield ranks. The club were intent on recruiting at least two more operators to fill the void—but Ugarte's misfortune in Uruguay's World Cup clash against Spain has thrown a spanner in the works.

Stretched off with suspected serious ligament damage to his knee, the midfielder's injury has prompted a rethink at Old Trafford. The Daily Mail reports that United could be forced to abandon plans for a third midfield recruit, with Ugarte's condition directly impacting their budget flexibility. Any proceeds from his sale were earmarked to bolster their midfield depth; without that windfall, a third signing becomes considerably less feasible.

There's a silver lining, however. United can still pursue Matheus Fernandes or an alternative after securing Ederson, even if Ugarte remains. The stumbling block is purely financial—a third midfielder remains largely dependent on recouping funds from Ugarte's departure.

Fernandes the Prize, But Spurs Circle

Fernandes has emerged as United's primary target to strengthen midfield further, with the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder representing the club's ideal next step. Yet they face stiff competition from Tottenham, who are mounting a serious financial push to prise him away from West Ham.

The Hammers have valued their midfielder between £80-85m, and negotiations with Spurs are already underway. United will need to convince both the London club and Fernandes himself to choose Old Trafford over Tottenham, though personal terms are not anticipated to be a stumbling block.

Should Fernandes slip through their fingers, United have contingencies. Bournemouth's Alex Scott heads a shortlist of alternatives that includes Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton.

However, journalist Nicolo Schira suggested Saturday that United hold the advantage in the Fernandes race. Despite Tottenham's substantial bid, the Red Devils are understood to be leading the pursuit, with talks progressing. Real Madrid have made enquiries, though Tottenham's manager remains fixated on Enzo Fernandez as his primary midfield target.
