Man Utd Chasing Quality Over Quantity in Midfield Overhaul as Tchouameni Pursuit Hits Madrid Roadblock

Manchester United's summer recruitment strategy is focused squarely on securing elite midfield talent rather than settling for lesser options, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. The club's hierarchy have made clear they intend to bring in at least two new midfielders to replace departing stars Casemiro and the expected exit of Manuel Ugarte.

The Red Devils' recruitment team has already cast a wide net across Europe's top divisions. Romano confirmed that Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali are among the names receiving serious consideration, with both players fitting the bill of the "important names" United are pursuing rather than settling for fringe options.

Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouameni has emerged as another target on the radar. The France midfielder, now 26 and in his prime years, has caught the attention of United's decision-makers, but there's a significant stumbling block: Madrid show absolutely no signs of entertaining offers for their midfield lynchpin this summer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained the reality of the situation: while Tchouameni is "certainly appreciated" by those at Old Trafford, Real Madrid have given no indication whatsoever that they're willing to open the door to a summer exit. The Spanish giants remain firmly committed to keeping the midfielder at the Bernabéu.

This comes after a summer window in which United invested heavily in their forward line, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha. However, the club drew criticism for failing to address midfield concerns last season, despite making enquiries for Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher.

The Telegraph reported that United are keen to provide "real mobility alongside" Kobbie Mainoo, with Tchouameni representing one of several options being evaluated. However, Romano stressed that numerous pieces would need to fall into place before any deal could materialise—and right now, Madrid's stance makes any move virtually impossible.

Competition for targets remains fierce, with Manchester City also monitoring Elliot Anderson's situation. Romano concluded that the midfield market is set for significant activity this summer, though the immediate outlook on Tchouameni suggests United will need to explore alternative avenues if they're to strengthen their engine room.
