Rooney and Neville at odds over ideal candidate to replace Amorim at Old Trafford

The debate over who should inherit Manchester United's managerial hotseat has pitted two club legends against one another, with Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville championing contrasting visions for the club's future.

United moved swiftly to remove Ruben Amorim last week, ending a 14-month spell that yielded little but frustration. The Portuguese manager's tenure culminated in a disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham—hardly the trajectory a club of United's stature demands.

Michael Carrick has stepped into the breach as temporary steward, overseeing affairs until summer when a permanent appointment will be made. The rumour mill has already churned through several names: Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace, former Barcelona boss Xavi, and recently available Xabi Alonso have all surfaced as possibilities.

Neville has made his case for Brazil's Carlo Ancelotti, arguing that the demands placed on United's next manager are uniquely demanding. Speaking on The Overlap, he outlined four critical criteria: the ability to withstand the intense media scrutiny and noise that comes with the job; proven capability in securing top-four finishes and competing at Champions League level; the capacity to extract excellence from a squad brimming with elite talent and oversized personalities; and crucially, an understanding of both Premier League football and the Manchester United philosophy—one built on positive, attacking football with genuine pace and excitement.

Ancelotti, in Neville's estimation, ticks every box. The former United defender even reflected on a missed opportunity from 2013, when the club held talks with Ancelotti before Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, only for the Italian to drift towards Real Madrid instead.

Rooney, however, sees matters differently. The United legend believes England manager Thomas Tuchel represents the outstanding option for the permanent role. Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney acknowledged that whoever takes the interim position faces a genuine opportunity to prove themselves—echoing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's trajectory from caretaker to permanent boss. But should that interim manager falter, Tuchel remains his preferred destination.

Rooney expressed hope that Tuchel might first deliver World Cup glory with England, before potentially making the switch to Old Trafford. Either way, the England boss sits at the top of Rooney's wishlist should the summer appointment prove necessary.
