Champions League Football and Carrick's Future Will Shape Man Utd's Summer Midfield Plans

Manchester United face a pivotal summer in midfield, but their shopping list hinges on two critical variables that remain unresolved, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils must overhaul their midfield ranks following Casemiro's departure, with the prospect of losing Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte adding further complexity to their recruitment puzzle. One or possibly two midfielders will arrive at Old Trafford, but exactly who depends on circumstances still very much in flux.

Romano identified Champions League football as the first determining factor. While the financial boost of European football would undoubtedly help United's summer spending power, the club has demonstrated they can attract talent without continental football—last summer's arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens proved as much. Nevertheless, Champions League access would meaningfully strengthen their hand in the transfer market.

The second factor carries even greater weight: Michael Carrick's future. The interim manager has impressed since taking charge, and Romano suggests his chances of securing the job permanently look promising if he maintains his current trajectory. However, no decision has been made, nor has anything been formally communicated. Such matters typically aren't settled until late spring at the earliest.

"To understand what kind of player they want to sign, we have to wait for two factors," Romano explained, noting that the manager's identity will shape the entire recruitment approach.

United's midfield targets include Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson among others, though the club will hold fire on major decisions until greater clarity emerges.

Regarding Scott McTominay, United can shelve any lingering interest. The former academy product has thrived at Napoli and the Serie A side are now actively pursuing a contract extension to reward his stellar performances. Romano indicated Napoli aim to reach an agreement within the coming weeks, with McTominay having established himself as one of Italy's standout performers when fit.

"I'm not aware of anything advanced with Man United," Romano stated, suggesting the midfielder's future lies in Naples rather than Manchester. Napoli's focus remains firmly on tying down their improved midfielder rather than entertaining offers from England.
