Ederson Deal Still Unresolved as United Plot Midfield Overhaul; Hojlund Exit Cash Set to Arrive

Manchester United are weighing up their midfield reinforcements this summer, with Ederson continuing to feature prominently on their radar—though a deal remains far from done.

The Atalanta midfielder has been a long-standing recruitment target for the Old Trafford hierarchy, with United's scouts first earmarking him back in summer 2025. A move proved impossible at that juncture, given Atalanta's reluctance to part with their prized asset. The landscape has shifted considerably, however. With Ederson's contract due to expire in 2027 and the player showing no inclination to extend, the Serie A club have now made him available.

United's hierarchy are acutely aware of Atalanta's €45 million valuation and have been in active dialogue with the Brazilian's representatives. Yet according to Fabrizio Romano, the situation remains fluid. "The deal is not completed yet," Romano stated, emphasising that whilst Ederson features on United's shortlist, he is far from the only name under consideration. The Red Devils are simultaneously pursuing alternatives as they hunt for at least two midfield additions to offset the departures of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte.

Ederson's availability comes after Atletico Madrid recently pivoted towards Wolves' Joao Gomes, leaving the door open for United to pursue their long-held interest. Personal terms are believed to have been agreed, though the absence of a formal deal underscores the ongoing complexities.

Hojlund's Exit Windfall on the Horizon

On the outgoings front, United are set to receive a significant financial boost from Rasmus Hojlund's permanent departure to Napoli. Should the Serie A side secure Champions League qualification—a verdict due Monday—an obligation to buy clause will automatically trigger, handing United €44 million on top of the €6 million loan fee received in August 2025.

The combined package totals €50 million, with the transfer machinery set to click into place next week. Notably, Hojlund's Napoli contract will include an €85 million release clause, though this only becomes active from June 2027 onwards, providing the Italian club with some medium-term security.

This injection of funds represents a timely windfall for United as they plan their summer rebuild ahead of their return to the Champions League.
