Man Utd Set to Make Major Midfield Moves This Summer as Goretzka Links Swirl

Manchester United are gearing up for a substantial midfield investment when the summer window opens, with the club preparing to make decisive moves in that department.

The Red Devils invested over £200m on five summer signings last year—Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon—with a clear focus on bolstering their attacking options. The Premier League's fifth-worst attack last season has seen improvements this term, particularly from Mbeumo and Cunha. Yet the decision to overlook midfield reinforcements, despite pursuing Conor Gallagher before his January switch to Tottenham and Brighton's Carlos Baleba, has drawn considerable criticism from supporters.

Now, with Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka's departure confirmed for the summer, speculation has intensified around a potential Old Trafford move. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund announced the news this week, stating: "Leon feels very much at home in this club and this team. Despite several quality inquiries, he has decided to stay here until the end of the season. After open and constructive talks, we have come to the conclusion together that he will seek out a new challenge in the summer. It'll be eight years at Bayern – eight extremely successful years with a strong person and player. Leon will give his all up to the summer to win as many more titles with the team as possible."

However, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has indicated that United's midfield plans may not centre on the Bayern man. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained: "My understanding is that Manchester United plan to go very big in midfield in the summer transfer window. Casemiro is leaving, and United could sign one or even two midfielders. At the moment, I am not aware of anything advanced between United and Goretzka."

Goretzka, who will depart as a free agent, is attracting interest from multiple quarters. "Atletico Madrid showed interest in January and could return, while clubs from England, Italy and Germany are also monitoring the situation," Romano added. "Goretzka will take his time and decide at the end of the season. United, meanwhile, are focusing on important midfield options, likely younger profiles, and will make significant moves in that area."

The confirmation that Casemiro will leave this summer effectively opens the door for United to pursue ambitious targets as they seek to reshape their engine room.
