Leao's Premier League Dream Hinges on World Cup Heroics, Romano Suggests

Rafael Leao has made his intentions crystal clear: the Portuguese winger wants out of AC Milan and is targeting either the Premier League or La Liga for his next challenge.

Speaking to Sport TV ahead of Portugal's World Cup campaign, the 26-year-old laid out his thinking bluntly. "I need a new challenge. I already won two trophies in Italy and have been there for a while," he explained. "The league is evolving, but for my style of football, I think the Premier League or La Liga would make more of my talent, as a player."

The winger elaborated on his Premier League preference, saying: "If a Premier League opportunity were to come along, I would be very happy. I think that I can put my talent up against the players there, who are of a very high level. Playing in that kind of a league really gets the best out of a player."

Leao has long harboured admiration for Manchester United, citing Cristiano Ronaldo's illustrious spell at Old Trafford as inspiration. "Yeah of course I like Manchester United because my idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, so back then, I used to watch them. I like Arsenal also," he previously stated.

The Portuguese forward's public declarations have certainly grabbed the attention of English clubs. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool have all been approached regarding the winger's availability, with AC Milan understood to be open to a deal in the region of €50m this summer, despite their preference to negotiate fresh terms.

Yet transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano suggests the path to a Premier League switch isn't straightforward. Remarkably, the only concrete enquiries so far have arrived from Turkey—modest in ambition compared to Leao's aspirations. Romano believes the winger's World Cup performance alongside Ronaldo and Portugal represents his best opportunity to rekindle genuine interest from the elite European sides.

"He wants out, period," Romano stated. "His future remains completely up in the air and will also depend on Milan, who are currently sorting out their own management and managerial future."

Leao's willingness to go public without an agreement already in place is unusual in modern football mechanics—typically, such dramatic announcements follow secured deals. Instead, the winger has chosen to force the issue independently, convinced that his time in Italy has run its course. Whether a standout World Cup campaign can transform that conviction into concrete offers from Manchester or North London remains to be seen.
