Tchouameni the Pipe Dream as United Circle Ederson

Manchester United's summer recruitment plans are taking shape following their impressive second-half resurgence under Michael Carrick, who has now secured the permanent manager's role through 2028 after rescuing the club from relegation-form peril.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have earmarked Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as their marquee midfield addition, though landing the Frenchman appears an uphill battle. The Bernabéu outfit remain unwilling to part with their prized asset, who commands substantial wages that would stretch United's budget considerably.

The more realistic prospect involves Atalanta's Ederson, who has already shaken hands on personal terms with United and is actively waiting for the move to materialise. Romano revealed that the club have held face-to-face talks with the Serie A side, with recent missions to Italy designed to structure a workable deal.

United's summer shopping list extends beyond midfield. With Champions League football secured and significant wage bill reductions incoming—Casemiro and Jadon Sancho are departing, whilst Marcus Rashford is also expected to leave—the club possess the financial firepower to strengthen. A left-back and left-winger remain priority targets alongside at least two midfielders.

Romano suggested United are casting their net widely in the engine room. Sandro Tonali remains under consideration, though Elliot Anderson faces competition from Manchester City for his signature. Mateus Fernandes and Carlos Baleba are also on the radar, with the latter keen on a fresh challenge.

The prospect of landing Tchouameni appears remote, however. Described as the "dream" signing internally, the midfielder represents the sort of transformative acquisition United crave—a potential successor to Casemiro's influence. Yet Real Madrid's closed-door policy and the player's lucrative contract make such a move prohibitively difficult.

Carrick's stabilisation of the club has at least provided clarity on the managerial front, ending months of speculation about whether a big-name appointment might materialise. Now the focus turns to backing the former midfielder with the reinforcements necessary to mount a genuine title challenge next season.
