Could Tonali Be the Missing Piece for United's Midfield Puzzle?

The January transfer window saw plenty of noise surrounding Sandro Tonali's potential availability, though the Newcastle midfielder was never realistically heading anywhere in the final scramble of the market.

Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg kicked things off on deadline day, suggesting Arsenal had made contact about bringing the Italian to the Emirates. That narrative quickly unravelled. Ben Jacobs countered that the Magpies had made clear Tonali wasn't for sale and that Arsenal hadn't actually been in touch. David Ornstein then reported the player's representatives had offered him to Arsenal, albeit without any formal dialogue with Newcastle itself.

Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso swiftly moved to pour cold water on the speculation. Speaking to Sky Sport in Italy, he stressed that Newcastle would hold firm in January and that no conversation with Arsenal had taken place. "We haven't spoken to Arsenal about this opportunity," Riso stated. "It's not even being discussed now. We will see around March about Sandro's valuation but only if Newcastle decide to open doors. He's completely focused on Newcastle's season now, it's a nonsense topic."

Fabrizio Romano has since clarified the situation, explaining that while Arsenal do retain genuine interest in the 25-year-old, any serious movement will come in the summer. The Italian journalist expects substantive talks between Tonali's camp and Newcastle to materialise sometime between February and April, with those conversations likely to shape the midfielder's next destination.

"It would have been completely unrealistic to try to sign a player of Tonali's level in the final 24 hours of the market, especially considering how long similar deals normally take," Romano reasoned on his YouTube channel. Beyond Arsenal, Juventus and other leading English clubs are also monitoring his situation closely.

Yet Manchester United's interest shouldn't be overlooked. Danny Simpson, the former Premier League full-back who cut his teeth at Old Trafford before starring in Leicester's 2015/16 title triumph, reckons Tonali could be precisely what the Red Devils need alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

"I think Tonali would work really well in that United midfield," Simpson told Metro. "He would complement Kobbie Mainoo really nicely, because he gets about the pitch so well. Obviously, he's been a top player for Newcastle. He's good on the ball, he's strong, he's physical, he'd be a brilliant player in there in many regards. Also, he's the type of player that I think could wear a Man Utd shirt. It's not easy, that, and I feel like he could wear it with the pressure and deal with it. He could definitely slot in there."
