Rashford's Manchester United Return Becomes Possibility as Barcelona Dither Over Deal

Marcus Rashford could yet find his way back to Old Trafford this summer, with Manchester United increasingly keen to resolve the winger's uncertain future as Barcelona prevaricate over their purchase options.

The England international departed United on loan to Aston Villa midway through last season following a falling-out with then-manager Ruben Amorim. By summer, it was evident his time at the club had run its course, prompting a season-long switch to Barcelona.

The Catalan outfit hold a €30 million option to make the deal permanent, but their well-documented financial troubles have prompted them to explore renegotiating the arrangement. Rather than stumping up the required fee, Barcelona are attempting to either extend the loan or adjust the terms—whilst simultaneously casting their net wider in the winger market.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between the clubs remain ongoing. "Man Utd insist on a €30 million buy option clause," Romano explained. "Otherwise, the player could return and the club would decide his future."

Romano added that Barcelona are actively hunting for alternatives, targeting both emerging talents and established names. The Catalans maintain that Rashford's relationship with his coach and teammates is strong, and they want to keep him—provided United agrees to fresh terms.

However, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness reckons a return to Manchester is now plausible. Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness suggested Rashford hasn't quite set Barcelona alight. "He's done ok, but he hasn't really been the outstanding superstar that he was once thought of," Wyness said.

He acknowledged the practical headaches of reintegrating Rashford, but highlighted one significant advantage: Michael Carrick's arrival as manager. "With Michael Carrick, there's a much better chance of that happening because they played together," Wyness explained. "It would make integration slightly easier, but still it's a very difficult position for all parties involved."

One further complication: Rashford's wages are set to jump by 25 per cent next season should United secure Champions League qualification—a detail that will hardly simplify matters for any club weighing up their options.
