Rashford's Barcelona Future Uncertain as Laporta's Position Threatens £26m Deal

The prospect of Marcus Rashford staying put at Barcelona has taken a wobble, with Manchester United potentially in the frame for a shock reunion should the Spanish giants' purse strings prove too tight.

Rashford arrived at the Camp Nou last summer on loan from United, complete with a £26m purchase option. His form at Aston Villa had convinced Barcelona he was worth the gamble as cover for Luis Diaz and Nico Williams, and he's delivered in spades—ten goals and 13 assists across 34 appearances this season have vindicated that decision. Whether deployed centrally or out wide, he's been a genuine difference-maker.

On the surface, making the deal permanent appears a formality. Both club and player are reportedly aligned on extending their arrangement, and Joan Laporta, Barcelona's president, is said to be a keen admirer of the English winger. The Catalans have climbed to the top of La Liga, progressed in the Champions League, already lifted the Super Cup, and reached the Spanish Cup semi-finals—much of that success built on Rashford's contribution.

Yet complications have emerged. Spanish reports suggest Barcelona may lack the financial firepower to complete the transfer, particularly given their simultaneous hunt for a top-tier centre-back and striker. Should Laporta not retain his position in upcoming elections, the deal could face additional headwinds.

That uncertainty has forced Barcelona into contingency planning. They've compiled a four-man shortlist of alternatives, should Rashford's permanent arrival prove unaffordable: Jack Grealish, Nicolo Zaniolo, Said El Mala, and Malick Fofana.

Grealish, interestingly, appears the most straightforward option. Pep Guardiola is reportedly willing to facilitate another loan move for his former Aston Villa charge, with Manchester City prepared to offer favourable terms on a temporary deal plus option to buy. That flexibility could prove crucial if Barcelona's finances don't stretch to Rashford's fee.

For United, this represents an unexpected lifeline—the chance to reintegrate a player who's rediscovered his best form elsewhere.
